OFFICIALS

Officials ensure that events are conducted in a safe and fair manner, and adhere to the governing rules of the sport.

Officials Classifications

Officials are classified into five distinct levels. Provincial Technical Official (PTO) Level 1 and 2 are combined to cover novice, club, and local Officials.  National Technical Official (NTO) status allows officials to work at Provincial and National Championship events and at international events; Continental Technical Official (CTO) and International Technical Official (ITO) status is required for Officials at major International events such as the Pan Am Games and Olympic Games.

Across the Province

To meet a growing roster of events, Triathlon Alberta conducts two to three Officials clinics each year. At a typical event, between two and five Officials are required. However, with larger events where participation can exceed 1,500 athletes, there is often a need to provide over thirty Officials for shifts lasting over eight hours.

Regional events, including Provincial Championships and the Alberta Summer Games, provide an excellent opportunity for Officials to gain valuable experience and mentor under senior-level Officials.

OFFICIALS’ TRAINING PATHWAY

Triathlon Officials are volunteers who help run the sport, keeping triathlon safe and fair for everyone.  It’s not an easy job, but it offers a very rewarding experience and many unique opportunities for those with the interest, attitude and energy required.

PROVINCIAL OFFICIAL LEVEL 1

  • This entry-level course is the first step on the officials’ development pathway and prepares candidates to officiate their first triathlon.

  • No previous experience is necessary, although familiarity with the sport of triathlon is a definite asset. The course is free, and once fully qualified, officials are provided a complementary Triathlon Alberta membership.

PROVINCIAL OFFICIAL LEVEL 2

  • This course prepares experienced officials to operate as Head Official or Technical Delegate at provincial races.

  • Officials are expected to gain two years’ experience at a variety of races, (age group, youth, draft-legal, qualifier, championship) before being invited to take this course.

NATIONAL TECHNICAL OFFICIAL

  • This course is run by the national sport organization and prepares experienced Head Officials to officiate at national championship and international events.

  • Candidates are nominated by Triathlon Alberta from qualified level 2 officials.
